Common Name:   German Chamomile

German chamomile is a medicinal herb that is easy to grow and is commonly used as a calming tea. This is a great plant for use in an edible landscape. Easy to start from seeds and will frequently spread by reseeding on its own.

Latin Name:   Matricaria recutita

Annual/Perennial:   Annual, (reseeds itself in Zone 5)

Parts of Plant Used:   flower heads, best picked just before opening.

Medicinal Benefits:   mild sedative, nervine, anti-inflamatory, antispasmodic, digestive system, indigestion, mild insomnia, teething, canker sores, colic, diaper rash, peptic ulcer, diarrhea, eczema

Ways to Use:   tea, infusion, tincture, cider vinegar tincture, syrup, compress, poultice, ointment, salve, cream, infused oil, sleep pillow, honey, liniment, bath.

Recipes:

Tea – 8 ounces of just under boiling water poured over 1 heaping tablespoon of dried flower tops, steep for 10 minutes, strain, drink 3-4 times a day.

Tincture – 3-10 ml 3x a day.
